The Book Genius Summer Writing Blockbuster

The July Masterclass is for you if Marketing makes you feel —

Intimidated

You realize that marketing is necessary to ensure your book isn't invisible, but you don't know where to start. Should you be on TikTok? Substack? Instagram? YouTube? How do you create a mailing list? A podcast? We'll get you clarity to build your Author Platform — and keep your sanity.

Confused

The social media landscape presents a new option on a daily basis. Which ones qualify as an "author platform?" What moves the needle if you're pursuing a traditional publishing deal vs. self-publishing? We'll cut through the noise.

Overwhelmed

It's enough work to write a book. If the idea of also having to worry about marketing seems like the last straw, this is the right Masterclass to sort out what matters from what does not — so you can place your focus only where it needs to be.

Discouraged

There's nothing worse than putting your time into a book only to find it's largely invisible in a sea of other offerings. If you're wondering what you need to do — or frustrated that you've already done more than you imagined — this Masterclass is essential.

Here is what no one tells writers: marketing is no longer something your publisher does for you. Whether you're traditionally published or independent, you are now the franchise. The author IS the marketing engine — and the publishers signing deals right now are looking for authors who understand this. This Masterclass gives you that understanding — and a real, workable plan — in one evening.

The Story You Need to Hear First

She applied the same marketing system to a historic Lady Gaga album,
a QVC brand launch, and a self-published novel.
It worked every time.

I was a full-time attorney when I wrote my first book. No writing room, no sabbatical, no publishing contract — just an idea, a desk at work, a commute, and a voice recorder in my car. I wrote in the margins of my legal career, and I treated the book like a business asset from day one, because that's exactly what I knew it could be.

My first commercial book took three weeks to write. I executed a lean marketing plan and used smart strategy for publicity. Between publishing income and the consulting work those efforts unlocked, that first year I earned almost double my attorney salary.

While I worked and wrote alongside my career, the biggest benefit was stability. I'd spent years working for startups — good money when it lasted, brutal when it didn't. Publishing income smoothed the valleys. When COVID hit and I was laid off, self-published royalties replaced nearly half my lost income. Writing had given me something no employer could take away.

Before I became a full-time author, I'd spent over a decade running marketing campaigns for some of the biggest entertainment launches you know — including, as Executive Vice President of Digital Strategy at Lady Gaga's management company, running the digital marketing agency of record for the Born This Way album that went platinum in its first week, with 1.1 million copies sold. Only 24 other albums have done this in the 35-year history of the sales tracking chart.

Since then, I've launched a cosmetics brand from zero sales to QVC and made a book passed on by over a dozen agents a bestseller in under eighteen months — my debut novel, Black Girls Must Die Exhausted.

When I self-published, I applied the same marketing framework I'd used professionally. I knew who my reader was. I built social proof, prioritized the right assets, and ran the campaign. In eighteen months: 20,000 copies sold. Then, a pre-emptive four-book deal with HarperCollins. Since then: over 300,000 copies, a six-figure advance earned out twice, and books six and seven coming next year from the number one and number two publishers in the world.

The marketing system didn't change. Only the product did.
This system is what I teach.

"The reason my books sell is the same reason Lady Gaga's album went platinum in week one. It's the same reason a cosmetics brand no one had heard of ended up on QVC. There is a system. It works across every product — including yours."

What's included

The Book Genius July Masterclass

1
Evening Masterclass · July 1 · 6pm ET
Live Teaching Evening
Four live 45-minute sessions plus a bonus session on the evening of July 1. Each session builds on the last. You leave with a workable author marketing plan and the confidence to start using it the next morning.

What you will learn — the four sessions:

01
Session 1 · 45 minutes
"But, I'm Not a Marketer?" — A Plain-Language Guide to How All of This Actually Works

If you have ever felt lost, confused, or quietly helpless when the conversation turns to marketing — this session is specifically for you. We start at the very beginning. How does publishing actually measure success? What do bestseller lists mean — and what don't they mean? By the end of this session, the landscape you've been operating in blind will be fully visible. You will understand where you fit, what success realistically looks like for your specific book and career, and why none of this was ever as complicated as it seemed.

Topics include: how the publishing world actually works in 2026 · bestseller lists decoded · what publishers now look for in authors · how to define success on your own terms
02
Session 2 · 45 minutes
And the Oscar Goes to — What the Marketing Campaign for Sinners Can Teach Every Author

Ryan Coogler's campaign for Sinners became one of the most talked-about entertainment launches in recent memory — because it was built entirely on storytelling, not advertising. In this session we translate those principles directly into author marketing. You'll discover your own author story and learn which content formats carry it most naturally — making marketing feel like an extension of your writing, not a departure from it.

Topics include: storytelling-led marketing · why publishers now sign authors with platforms · how to find your author story · content formats built for writers
03
Session 3 · 45 minutes
Everything You Actually Need to Market Your Book — And Nothing You Don't

The internet will tell you that you need to be on every platform, posting every day. You don't. This session is permission to stop trying to do everything and start doing the right things. You'll leave with a clear, prioritized list of what to create or acquire first — and the relief of knowing exactly what you can ignore.

Topics include: your cover as your most important marketing asset · graphic design tools at every budget · building an early reader program · what not to do
04
Session 4 · 45 minutes
A Marketing Plan You Can Actually Live With

Four real, tested content workflows built around longer-form anchor content you create once and distribute in smaller pieces. You pick the one that matches how you already think and create. Then we build your personal 30-day plan — specific, sustainable, designed to grow your platform without eating your writing time. No TikTok dances. No burnout.

Four workflow templates · episodic content strategy · how the 30-day immersion locks in your workflow
Bonus Session · Included
Should I Be Using AI for This? Honest Answers and Prompts That Actually Work

What AI can genuinely help with in your marketing workflow, what it will make worse, and how to use it while keeping your voice intact. You'll leave with specific prompts that produce useful output — for bio writing, email drafts, content outlines, and more.

Topics include: AI prompts for author marketing · maintaining your authentic voice · what not to hand off to AI

What the 30-day content strategy includes:

  • A daily content prompt to build your author platform step by step — no guesswork, no blank-page paralysis
  • Personal field videos from Jayne, filmed while actively marketing her own books — honest, specific, and from the field
  • 1-year membership to the Book Genius online community ($99 value) — writers supporting writers, all summer long
  • 30-day recording access to all Masterclass sessions beginning July 2 — audio and video, listen like a podcast on your schedule

Why this is different

Most marketing advice is theory.
This is the actual system — taught by someone using it right now.

The framework Jayne teaches in July is the same one she applied to a Lady Gaga platinum album campaign, a QVC brand launch, and a self-published novel that became a Big 5 deal. It's not adapted from business school. It's not borrowed from another industry. It's what she is actively doing on deadline, for her own HarperCollins books, while teaching you.

When you learn here, you learn from the field. Not from memory.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know.

Do I need to have a book finished to take this Masterclass?

No. This Masterclass is valuable whether your book is finished, in progress, or still an idea. Understanding marketing before you finish writing means you build your platform as you write — which is actually the most effective approach.

What if I can't attend live on July 1?

All sessions are recorded. You'll have 30-day access to recordings beginning July 2, in both audio and video format — so you can listen like a podcast on your own schedule.

I took the June Masterclass. Is July right for me?

Absolutely — July builds directly on June and takes you into the marketing work, which is the natural next step once you have a book in progress or finished. Many June students are already enrolled.

I'm self-published. Is this relevant to me?

Yes — actually more so. Self-published authors have full control of their marketing and every tool available. This Masterclass covers what works across both traditional and independent publishing.

What's the difference between the three purchase options?

The July standalone ($225) includes the July Masterclass and 30-day content strategy only. The June + July Bundle ($350) adds the June recordings — saving $72 versus buying both separately. The Full Summer Bundle ($497) covers all three months — June, July, and August — saving $157. The full bundle also includes a payment plan option: 3 payments of $175. If you're considering more than one month, the bundle math makes the decision easy.

I don't have a platform. Is it too late to start?

This Masterclass is specifically designed for writers starting from zero. Session 3 covers exactly how to begin building a platform with no existing audience. Starting now is the right move — the earlier in your writing process you begin, the more momentum you'll have by publication.

Your book deserves readers.
Let's go find them.

The Masterclass is one evening. The 30-day content strategy is one month. The results — a platform, a plan, and the confidence to use them — are permanent.
